History

IBPM was founded in 2003 to bring together scientific and methodological expertise from three CNR Research Centres hosted at Sapienza University of Rome:

- the Centre of Molecular Biology, founded by Prof. Alessandro Rossi Fanelli in 1965,
- the Centre of Evolutionary Genetics, started in 1969 under the direction of Prof. Giuseppe Montalenti,
- the Centre of Nucleic Acids, founded in 1970 by Prof. Giorgio Tecce, its inspirational Director for over twenty years.

In 2003, research groups from the CNR Institute of Biomedical Technology (ITBM), active in translational research, joined the IBPM and formed the laboratory of Molecular Pathology.
In 2013, a research unit from the CNR Institute of Biomolecular Chemistry (ICB) also joined, bringing to IBPM the expertise for in-house design and synthesis of relevant molecules.
