History
The CNR Institute of Molecular Biology and Pathology (IBPM) is operative since January 15, 2003; it derives from the merging of three CNR “Centri di Studio” located at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”, namely the C.S Acidi Nucleici, Biologia Molecolare and Genetica Evoluzionistica, with a Unit of the former Institute of Biomedical Technologies (ITBM).
The project is based on the recognition that the scientific problems of modern biology require an interdisciplinary approach that utilizes the common or complementary concepts and technologies that characterized the traditional disciplines of biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics and molecular pathology.
The research at the C.S. Acidi Nucleici, funded by Prof. Giorgio Tecce in 1970, has always focused on the structure-function relationships, organization and dynamics of the genetic material and on the control of gene expression both in vitro and in vivo.
At the C.S. Biologia Molecolare, funded by Prof. Alessandro Rossi Fanelli in 1965, the research activity focuses mainly on the structure-function relationships of proteins and their applications in the field of medicine in particular.
At the C.S. Genetica Evoluzionistica, funded by Prof. Giuseppe Montalenti in 1969, the investigations comprise basic and applied mutagenesis, genetic variability and the onset of human diseases, structure and function of the eukaryotic chromosome and control of the cell cycle and proliferation. The ITBM Unit performs studies on the molecular mechanisms underlying cell differentiation and proliferation in normal and pathological models.
